Work Group 4 : Developping countries

Background

Most developing countries and emerging economies offer excellent natural conditions for PV.  Large scale grid-connected PV can render those countries more independent from the erratic developments of the international oil markets. Sustainable PV off-grid solutions are least cost solutions for rural electrification. Ever more developing countries become aware of these opportunities.  However, deployment of PV is still far behind its potential. Various limiting factors hinder the rapid expansion of PV: Insufficient energy policies, lack of financial resources, limited technical and managerial know how. The Working Group analyses these limiting factors and proposes solutions for overcoming them.

Objectives

  • Analysis and communication of recent market trends and development cooperation projects
  • Support for training and capacity building activities in developing countries (technical and managerial know how)
  • Development and promotion of sustainable financing schemes for PV
  • Exchange with the European Commission with a view to identify research needs for the deployment of PV in developing countries and for fostering international research cooperation.
