Vision

Photovoltaic solar energy technology can and will make important contributions to society in the form of:

  • creation of knowledge, jobs and welfare by building an innovative and cost-competitive sustainable energy sector;
  • large scale deployment of photovoltaics as renewable electricity generation technology by the year 2020 and beyond, leading to reduced carbon emissions and improved security of supply;
  • provision of access to electricity to populations that are currently excluded due to lack of appropriate infrastructure.

In this context, the European photovoltaic sector will be a leading and sustainable provider of products and services to Europe and the rest of the world.

Mission Statement

The Platform is an independent and objective body which aims to be the recognised point of reference for key decision and policy makers. The Platform’s Mission is to develop a strategy and corresponding implementation plan for education, research & technology development, innovation and market deployment of photovoltaic solar energy, to realise its Vision.

Scope

The Platform reflects the opinions and interests of all major European stakeholder groups in the photovoltaic sector  and other related sectors . The Platform recruits its members from Europe; it may seek representation of experts from other parts of the world in specific cases. The focus of the Platform's activities is on opportunities and challenges for Europe and the European photovoltaic sector, but always in the clear context of global developments.

Approach

  • As a point of reference, the Platform collects, develops, maintains and communicates high-quality, up-to-date information and insights on all important aspects related to photovoltaic solar energy. It publishes reference documents such as the Strategic Agendas and Implementation Plans.
  • The Platform communicates intensively with European Institutions, EU Member State governments and other relevant stakeholders to promote a harmonized approach towards accelerated development and large-scale deployment of photovoltaic solar energy.
  • The Platform proactively establishes working contacts and cooperation with other Technology Platforms, international organizations, interest groups and networks  where this is appropriate.
  • Specifically, the Platform recognises the paramount importance and potential impact of the 2009 EU Renewable Energies Directive and the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan), and works together with the European Photovoltaic Industry Association on the 2020 agenda.
